MISSION

Shelter Movers is a national, volunteer-powered charitable organization providing moving and storage services at no cost to individuals and families fleeing abuse. We collaborate with local businesses and community agencies to support people, primarily women and children, as they transition to a life free of violence.

The charitable organization serves the following population:

Shelter Movers Greater Toronto supports all individuals and families fleeing gender-based violence (GBV) in the Greater Toronto Area. Although anyone can experience GBV, women, girls, Two Spirit, trans and non-binary people are at highest risk and Shelter Movers serves all survivors of abuse, and women make up more than 90% of our clients. Research also shows that some populations, including women with disabilities, Indigenous women, racialized women, women experiencing poverty, are at even higher risk of experiencing GBV due the additional discrimination and barriers that they face.

Currently, we provide limited services in Burlington and Halton and are in the early stages of planning an expansion to more fully service the region. We accept ad hoc referrals for our services from agencies such as Halton Women’s Place or the Women’s Center of Halton and hope to formalize these relationships in early 2025. At this time, we support 1-2 clients in Halton per month with moving services only.

The donated funds would be used for:

• Ramp up our recruitment efforts in Halton Region
• Secure storage in Halton Region
• Begin moving up to 5 individuals or families each month in Halton Region in early 2025

The Organization’s current sources of funding are:

• 25% of our revenue is from government
• 25% from events and campaigns
• 50% from gifts from corporate partners, individuals and foundations.
