MISSION

To provide students if the Halton District School Board with opportunities to reach their potential through financial support that removes educational barriers and increases equity.

The charitable organization serves the following population:

HDSB students who have financial barriers to learning success.

How does this charity serve Burlington/Halton directly:

  • One in ten students in Halton faces financial barriers to learning.HLF helps support equity in education by providing about 2,000 students of the Halton District School Board annually (a third from Burlington) with some financial support to access basic necessities and to participate in learning opportunities like field trips and co-op placements.Another 30 Burlington students receive scholarships from HLF every year to help fund post-secondary education.E.g., William is in foster care. He needed some basic necessities related to personal hygiene, and frustration was getting in the way of his success at school. HLF provided gift cards so he could purchase these items. Ensuring students have some choice in the products they select is important to maintaining their dignity.E.g., Logan has an exceptional co-op placement that will allow him to fulfill his dream of becoming a heavy machinery operator, but he was struggling with the cost of transportation to the job site. HLF subsidized the cost, making it affordable for him to participate.E.g., Taylor has special needs and requires the daily support of a wagon to get to school. His wagon is broken and Mom can’t afford to fix it. HLF paid for a new wagon and now Taylor can get to school safely.

HLF doesn’t receive any funding from the government or United Way. We are reliant on the generosity of the community to fund our work, including charitable foundations, service clubs, companies and individuals who believe, as we do, that no student in our community should be left behind in learning due to financial barriers.
